Idea Generation

creativity

Systematically generate creative ideas using proven techniques that unlock novel connections and possibilities.

The Creative Paradox

Creativity isn't magic—it's a skill that improves with practice. The key insight: quantity leads to quality. Generate many ideas, then select the best.

Preparation Phase

1. Define the Problem Clearly

  • "How might we..." format
  • Specific enough to act on
  • Open enough for creativity

2. Gather Inputs

  • Research the domain
  • Look at adjacent fields
  • Collect diverse perspectives

3. Create the Right Conditions

  • Relaxed but alert state
  • No judgment zone
  • Time pressure can help (but not too much)

Generation Techniques

Brainstorming Rules

  1. Quantity over quality
  2. No criticism during generation
  3. Wild ideas welcome
  4. Build on others' ideas

Mind Mapping

  1. Central concept in middle
  2. Branch out associations
  3. Branch from branches
  4. Don't filter—follow connections

SCAMPER

Apply these prompts to existing ideas:

  • Substitute: What can be swapped?
  • Combine: What can be merged?
  • Adapt: What else is this like?
  • Modify: What can be changed?
  • Put to other uses: New applications?
  • Eliminate: What can be removed?
  • Reverse/Rearrange: Flip it?

Random Input

  1. Select a random word, image, or object
  2. List its characteristics
  3. Force connections to your problem

Selection Phase

  1. Let ideas sit (overnight if possible)
  2. Group similar ideas
  3. Score on criteria (novelty, feasibility, impact)
  4. Select top 3-5 for development

Overcoming Blocks

  • Change environment
  • Set a timer (urgency helps)
  • Ask "What if we had unlimited resources?"
  • Ask "What would [admired person] do?"
  • Take a break and let subconscious work
